A Thousand Directions

Life is a thicket of choices
a thousand roads leading towards
and directing away
from where I stand
a thousand books and road signs
pointing, but for life there is no map
the exact distance between
where I am and that place I could have been
is a jagged branch I could never truly climb
for the winds of regret only sway us
and serve to waste our time.

The Glorious Pirate

She is a giving goddess and yet she is a thief
exploring her horizon she will mightily spreads her wings
claiming all she touches and enlightening what holds her
she is a true paradox that no poetics can defer
she has a furious dance but never breaths a sigh
for all her truth unfolds on the kindling of a lie.

The Great Passing of The Torch

"And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see - or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read."  ~Alice Walker

They were the pillars that held it all together
from full plate to empty nest
they carried us through
in ice or fire's storm
and great depression's wake
holding a hidden strength
that needed no
light to grow
they the true
steel magnolias
never expected
a return for
their favor
for the
legacy of
a grandmother's
cannot be

The Mighty Things

"He who cannot forgive breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass."   ~George Herbert

It takes courage to live with someone who would harm you night or day,
and even more to just walk away.
It takes love to nurture a child, and hold him through life's trials,
and even more to let go when it is time.
It takes strength to convict a molester, and bring him to justice for his sin,
yet even more to forgive him.

Callused Hands

"You cannot help but learn more as you take the world into your hands. Take it up reverently, for it is an old piece of clay, with millions of thumbprints on it." ~John Updike

Life grabs and pulls us through with the strength of callused hands
never holding faintly with gloves to prevent weathers mark
it cradles opportunity and then thrusts it within our palm
in time and symmetry we learn to hold on with all our might
wisdoms brilliant sting progressively seeps in and also spills forth
its evidence like braille to the blind cannot be hidden only shared
for the rough hands of an old man
always serve to remind us
he has survived
life's storms
and so can
